One of our Golden ID friends has died

This evening I received this message from Addie Beatty along with an e-mail from the Office of Student Affairs informing her of John Seeley's death:

Mr. Jones,

    FYI, I am not certain Mr. John Seeley was part of the Golden ID Lunch group. Family visitation will be Thursday 12/1 from 3-5pm at Pumphrey's Bethesda-Chevy Chase Funeral Home.

This is very sad news. John attended our luncheons often, so I've known him for a number of years. Many of you know him as well. We'll all miss him.

John is on the far right-hand side of the photo at the top of the page.

May 4th Luncheon during Climate Change Forum

Benson Simon attended most of the Climate Change events yesterday but broke away to join us for lunch. Attendees were John Seeley, Benson Simon, Karen Eckert, Fran Steiner, Itzhak Goldberg, and Doug Jones.

Newcomer at April 13th Luncheon

Meeting her for the first time, I asked Belinda Blakey if she was related to jazz drummer Art Blakey since he was the only other person I knew of with that name. She responded that he was her cousin.

Tour of Clarice Smith Center for the Performing Arts

Just before semester break we had our luncheon at the center while listening to Bobby Asher, a Senior Associate Director of Clarice, bring us up to date on recent developments there. Following lunch, Stage Operations Manager Bill Brandwein gave us a tour of the center.

Tuesday's luncheon to be at Clarice Smith Center

The meeting place will be the Applause Café in the lobby of the center.  If you don't see it, ask at the ticket center on your left as you enter the main entrance.  The times are from 11:30 to 1:30 and will include a backstage tour. We've done this in the past, and those who attended were very enthusiastic about the experience.

Suggested Activities

In my most recent e-mail I called attention to the monthly commuter breakfasts in the Student Union which Louise Lovell has supplied me information concerning.

From Karen Eckert comes this suggestion:

"... please be sure and visit the exhibit at the gallery in the Arts/Sociology building. It's the 50th anniversary of the UMD Art Gallery and they are exhibiting some great works from their permanent collection, including Rembrandt van Rijn, Daumier, Baldessari, Warhol, and many others. There are some amazing old objects from Africa, Asia, and South America. It's worth sharing with our Golden ID friends."

First Spring Semester Luncheon
